Is my survey data really anonymous?

Yes. We use a token-based system and advanced encryption to ensure your identity is never linked to your health data. We do not store your name or Social Security number. Our platform uses a suppression floor that prevents small groups from being identified in any public report or registry data.

Does this replace the official VA health registry?

No. This is an independent survey tool designed for advocacy and community awareness. You should still file official claims through the Department of Veterans Affairs. However, our independent registry helps you see if your conditions are common among others who served in your specific unit or location.

How does the 3-year date range help the survey?

Using 3-year buckets for service dates and birth years protects your privacy while maintaining statistical accuracy. This range is precise enough to identify toxic exposure clusters and geographic health trends without revealing the specific identity of individual survey participants.

Who can participate in this veteran health survey?

This survey is open to all veterans, active duty service members, and their families. We also encourage contractors and civilians who lived or worked on military installations to participate. Accurate data requires input from everyone who may have been exposed to environmental hazards.

How is this survey project funded?

This is a 100% free service provided by the Blue Ridge Mountain Foundation. As a 501c3 non-profit, we do not sell your data to third parties. We rely on community support and donations to maintain this independent registry for the benefit of all veterans.

Can I update my health information later?

Yes. When you complete the survey, you receive a secure, private token link. You can use this link at any time to update your health status or add new information as your medical journey evolves. This ensures the national data remains current and accurate.

How is the survey data used for advocacy?

We provide research-grade data summaries to veteran service organizations and legislative bodies. By showing clear clusters of illness linked to specific bases or units, we provide the evidence needed to demand accountability and expanded benefits for toxic exposure.

How will the survey data be displayed?

Public results are aggregated into high-resolution reports categorized by military unit, specific health conditions, length of service, and age group. This allows veterans to see clear patterns of illness within their own peer groups. By grouping data this way, we can highlight environmental health trends that might be invisible in general medical records.

When and where can I search the survey results?

All data will be made available and publicly searchable on this website once a category reaches at least five unique entries. This "suppression floor" is a critical security measure that prevents the potential identification of any specific individual based on their unit, condition, or service dates. This ensures that the registry remains a tool for community advocacy while keeping every participant anonymous.

How can this data be used for VA disability claims?

The survey results can be utilized in support of Nexus letters or Independent Medical Opinions (IMOs). You can download aggregated statistical reports in PDF format that compare the health outcomes of your specific group against the national statistical averages of the general population. We utilize health data from the CDC’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to provide the baseline for these comparisons, giving you a powerful data point to show when a condition is significantly more prevalent in your veteran cohort than in the public at large.

How can law firms, VSOs, and other veteran sites use this data?

We offer secure data integration for qualified third-party organizations, including veteran disability groups, law firms, and advocacy platforms. Through our "Powered by National Veteran Health Survey" API and widget suite, other organizations can integrate our real-time health statistics directly into their own websites. This allows partners to provide their members with high-quality, unit-specific health data while helping us grow the national registry.

What are the requirements for data integration?

Organizations wishing to integrate our data must agree to a formal Data Use Agreement (DUA). This strictly prohibits the "re-identification" of any individual and restricts the use of the data to veteran advocacy, medical research, or legal support. We do not allow our data to be used for commercial marketing. Organizations must also display our service mark and a link back to the primary survey to ensure data integrity and transparency.
